The Lawn That Comes Quickly

Chris has invented a lawn that has been prematurely activated to come quickly!!
Conserve water & reduce the time that it takes to establish a lawn with Chris & Maries ‘Lawn That Comes Quickly’. Lawns and gardens take up greenhouse gases & cool down your home, they help to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in our environment. Normally when you sow a lawn you wait for weeks and its comes up patchy but with Chris & Maries prematurely activated seed your lawn comes up quickly, in around 3 days, and it’s green in a week! If you plant now the winter and spring rains will help water the seed for you. It costs $2 per m2 and can be watered with grey water, roof water or garden water from Chris and Maries.
The advantages of the lawn that comes quickly are:
• The short germination period means that it requires little watering to get your lawn up.
• When lawn is freshly sown, storms, wind, pedestrians, dogs & birds can all adversely affect your lawn, the risks are greatly reduced using pre-germinated seed as it comes up quicker.
• Rapid germination gives your lawn the jump on the weeds as the weeds germinate at a slower rate than the grass seeds do.
• ‘The Lawn that Comes Quickly’ can be used to repair drought damaged patches of lawn.
• It’s an easy to apply low cost option when compared with turf, ‘The Lawn that Comes Quickly’ seed costs $2 per m2 to sow.
We have used a winter germinating grass so that you can take advantage of the winter and spring rains to establish your lawn. If your lawn looks dead or patchy you can now use our lawn seed that comes quickly to make it green all over.
Each week we treat a batch of seed. Orders placed before 10am on a WEDNESDAY will be available for collection or delivery on FRIDAY afternoon or SATURDAY morning from the nurseries. The seed must be planted by Saturday night this means that you should have your site prepared (see foreplay). If the seed germinates prior to sowing results could be disastrous.
• Spray weeds with roundup, zero or gypsoplate and leave for 48hrs you may need to get a machine in to level this area at the end of the 48 hour period.
• Cultivate or dig over lawn area, break up soil to a depth of 6” and rake until surface is even and smooth. Where soil doesn’t cultivate up nicely spread an inch or two of good quality top soil over lawn area, use top soil to fill in holes and level the area to make the subsoil even before applying top soil. If you have good soil that cultivates well top soil is unnecessary.
• In areas less then 100m2 it is easy to cultivate by hand but on large areas it may be better to use a tiller or rotary hoe.
• For best results it is recommended to cultivate your soil 1-2 weeks before you sow your lawn seed this will allow the soil to soak up the winter rains.
You will require 1 litre of our prematurely activated seed mix per m2. Make sure that the soil is well cultivated and raked out smoothly and evenly. I divided the lawn into say 5 even sized zones and use stones or sticks to define each area, I then proportion my mix out into 10 equal volume containers, I then walk across each area and throw the contents of the containers out evenly over the area using a large sweeping throwing motion, to spread mix out evenly. Do this twice over each area, I usually go one way across the area the first time and the opposite way the second time this gives the most even spread.
Then do the other section over twice in the same way. Then you need a proper steel garden rake to rake over the seed and turn it into every shoulder. Only allow the tooth of the rake to penetrate 1cm into the ground then skim the rake over the surface so that the seed is incorporated into the surface. Use 2kg of our lawn fertiliser per 100m2, broadcast evenly as above. Now water the lawn with a nice gentle spray. Under current restrictions you can’t use tap water but you can use grey water, roof water or garden water, which can be purchased through Chris and Maries.
TAKING ADVANTAGE • Mow existing grass and weeds till they are short.
• Rake away all grass trimmings
• Stick lots of fork holes into bare areas to aerate the soil
• Throw an even layer of top soil over the entire lawn
• Rake until smooth
• Throw seed over entire lawn putting greater concentration in bare areas.
• Very lightly rake over the entire lawn with a steel rake to turn seed into the top soil
• Spray regularly with water as required to keep seed moist until it is well germinated
• Once grass is established the winter and spring rains should be adequate to sustain your lawn but keep an eye on it and water if necessary.
***NOTE: Garden water available from Chris and Maries during current water restrictions.
For the first two days seed must be kept moist if its dry and windy spray lightly up to 3 times a day, if it’s cool and still a spray once a day should do, and if it’s raining you won’t need to water at all.
Once the seed is up, reduce watering to once a day, if it’s not raining, and after a week or two it should be able to survive on normal winter rain but keep an eye on it and water if necessary. If you are short on water consider using a spray on garden bed wetter such as our Devotion garden bed wetter to help keep the ground moist.
**Don’t start mowing till your lawn is 7-8 inches tall then don’t cut it to below 4” this will help develop deep roots for winter. After three months the lawn can be top dressed with our lawn fertiliser to keep it looking lush and green.
When Chris first got the idea of the lawn that comes quickly he needed a test lawn to photograph for the week. Chris went down to Packenham and found a nicely kept new house and garden, one that was marred by a failed lawn. He knocked on the door and Lee answered the door. Chris asked if I could plant a lawn for free. We planted the lawn on a Tuesday and we left 2 of our h2ope tanks there with the pump so that Lee & his wife Rachael could water the lawn while it was germinating.
The lawn germinated on the Thursday evening with lots of little white shoots showing, the germination was impressively even with no weeds germinating in the lawn.
Within a week the lawn was green and Lee & Rachael were so proud of their lawn and loved how much better their whole property looked with a green front lawn.
Lee's father in law is a landscaper and he was very impressed at how quickly the lawn came up.
When we sowed the lawn the ground was bone dry and it only took around 1100 litres of water in total to provide the initial soak and the regular sprayings to get the lawn up to the point to where it will now pretty much be able to live off the winter and spring rains. The lawn area is just over 30m2.
