Devotion Planting Mix for Wet Feet, Heavy & Clay Soils

The Devotion range of potting and planting mixes contain starter fertilisers and trace elements. There are no controlled release fertilisers in them, which means that they are suitable for planting all types of plants into, including phosphorus sensitive plants such as grevilleas, proteas and natives. The even greater advantage is that controlled release fertilisers can be added to your potting mix as needed for each individual plant. Pellets of slow release fertiliser that are pre-mixed into most commercial potting mixes have partially or totally discharged by the time you take them home and use them.

At Chris & Marie's Plant Farms we have found through assisting customers with plant performance problems that 70% of poor plant performance or plant death during the establishment phase is caused by wet feet. Wet feet can be caused by poor drainage, heavy soil, fast decomposing manures and organic matter incorporated into the soil, excessive watering or a combination of the above factors. All cases of wet feet are avoidable. To avoid wet feet use our 'Wet Feet Kills' Instructions in conjunction with Devotion Planting Mix for Wet Feet, Heavy & Clay Soils. How to Use:

For Wet Feet, Heavy & Clay Soils

1. Cultivate and break up the planting area. If the ground is quite hard it may be necessary to moisten the soil with a soaker hose over several days to soften the hard ground. Use a spade or mattock to break up the planting area. For really wet areas a raised mound in conjunction with agricultural drains may be required, please refer to our 'Wet Feet Kills' information sheet. how to use devotion plant mix step 1
2. If you are planting large trees cultivate an area approx. 1.2m wide (4ft) x 30cm (1ft) deep. For garden beds dig a wide shallow hole, to a depth of around 30cm (1ft). Put the excavated soil into a neat mound some distance from the hole. Add additional soil from your garden to the excavated soil mound, the additional soil will allow you to create a raised mound to provide drainage for your plants.

3. Incorporate approximately 20% planting mix to the excavated soil mound and mix thoroughly. Shovel the mixed soil into the wide shallow hole and create a low wide mound to plant your plants into. A raised garden bed allows plants to be planted higher up in the soil which means that their roots aren't being allowed to sit in excessive amounts of water. how to use devotion plant mix step 3 4. Plant your plants into the soil mound. It is best to water your plants with Devotion Liquid Leaf & Stem Food before planting. When planting DO NOT tease the plant's roots. The teasing of plant roots can lead to rapid plant death, especially in the warmer summer months. Plant your plants high in the mound.
