If your garden bed receives less than ½ a day of full sun and your soil can become wet/ boggy and/or is heavy clay these screening plants are suitable for your garden situation:

Leightons Green

Botanical Name: Cupressocyparis leylandii
Height x width: 8m x 4m
Planting distance for screen: 1-2m
Conditions: Full sun, well drained soils, mulch around base, keep free of grass and weeds around the base. Wind, frost and salt tolerant
Features: Attractive green foliage, fast growing and hardy
Landscape use: Hedges, screens, windbreaks and specimens.

Toorak 'Gum Tree'™ Alnus

Botanical Name: Alnus jorulensis [Evergreen Alder]
Height x width: 10m x 10m, but best kept trimmed and contained
Planting distance for screen: 3m for large hedge, 1-2m for pleached feature or narrow screen
Conditions: Very hardy, will handle wet, keep contained in small areas as can be inclined to go for pipes
Features: Very fast growing and attractive tree with rich green foliage and a nice shape
Landscape use: Windbreak, specimen, avenue, narrow screens, pleached, trimmed as a specimen in small areas and left to grow unrestricted on larger properties

Laurustinus

Botanical Name: Viburnum tinus
Height x width: up to 3m x 3m
Planting distance for screen: 1-1.5m
Conditions: Sun to part shade, will tolerate a large range of soils but prefers moist well drained soils
Features: A rounded evergreen shrub with dark green glossy leaves that develop purple tones in winter, clusters of tiny white flowers in winter emerge from pink buds followed by blue-black berries.
Landscape use: Hedges, screens, garden specimens, containers.

Chilean Pencil Willow

Botanical Name: Salix chilensis
Height x width: 7-8m x 1m
Planting distance for screen: 70-80cm
Conditions: Full sun to part shade in moist soils.
Features: Narrow bright green waxy leaves with the form of the tree being very upright and columnar.
Landscape use: Hedges, screens, avenues, specimen.

Tarata

Botanical Name: Pittosporum eugeniodes variegatum
Height x width: 8m x 5m or can be trimmed lower in a hedge/screen
Planting distance for screen: 1-2m
Conditions: Full sun to part shade in well-drained soils, very hardy
Features: A fast growing tree with narrow, oval, wavy-edged leaves that are variegated grey-green and creamy white.
Landscape use: Hedges, Screens, Windbreaks.

Willow-leafed Hakea

Botanical Name: Hakea salicifolia syn H. saligna
Height x width: 4-6m x 2-3m
Planting distance for screen: 1-1.5m
Conditions: Full sun to part shade in well drained soil, tolerant of clay soils and dry conditions.
Features: Fast growing bushy small tree with red new growth, cream spidery flowers clustered around stems in summer followed by woody fruit.
Landscape use: Windbreaks, fire-retarding hedges, shade tree, amongst mixed shrubs.

Photinia

Botanical Name: Photinia robusta
Height x width: up to 3m x 3m
Planting distance for screen: 1-1.5m
Conditions: Sun to part shade, very hardy, will tolerate a large range of soils but prefers moist well drained soils
Features: A rounded evergreen shrub with dark green glossy leaves with bright red attractive new growth
Landscape use: Hedges, screens, garden specimen
