Aussie Outdoor Palm
Cordylines |
When I was a kid I lived in an old weatherboard house in the hills
and was mightily
impressed when my uncle Kevin built a modern style
triple fronted brick veneer house in Bundoora. Uncle Kevin called on
my dad, a nurseryman, to help him with the landscaping.
When we saw the completed design around the front of his house we
were even more impressed! Dad and Uncle Kevin had created a square
garden bed either side of the front landing and planted Flax and
Succulents and spread some pebbles around the plants and they had
finished the garden off with a painted concrete aboriginal standing
on one leg.
The
centerpiece of the gardens was a Cordyline australis or an Outdoor
Aussie Palm. It looked very exotic with its lush green grassy head
and attractive textured trunk; it shot up in no time and gave an
exotic tropical feel.
Ever since I have had a soft spot for the Aussie Outdoor Palm as
nothing grows so quickly and easily to give an exotic lush tropical
palm like feel. It is amazing to see that the Aussie Outdoor Palm,
pebble, succulents and flax are all back in fashion, I wonder if the
concrete aboriginal statue standing on one leg will come back! |

Cordylines are a genus of ornamental shrubs and trees grown
primarily for their foliage |
They
originate from Hawaii, South America, New
Zealand,
Polynesia and we have 8 native species here in Australia. Cordyline australis varieties
are best grown in the Melbourne climate and usually have a single trunk with several
ascending branches, each topped with a large thick mass of long sword like leaves, the
colours range from green, purple and yellow shaded with dark
pink. Cordylines don't seem to mind the soil they are in as long it is well drained, they
grow well in coastal areas. Once established they need little water and will tolerate dry
soils. Plant in full sun to part shade and fertilize every 6 months with Devotion Time Release fertilizer.
Some different varieties are:
'Red Star' A stunning accent plant for all gardens, has lovely ruby red to
burgundy sword shaped leaves, great to add colour to the garden or very classy in a pot.
Flowers appear above the foliage in long drooping panicles. Grows to 2 metres.
'Cordyline australis' The New Zealand Cabbage Tree is a slow growing evergreen sparsely
branched tree with each branch ending with a crowned rosette of strapped shaped long green
leaves, in late spring small fragrant white flowers in large open
panicles are formed. Grows 6-8 metres.
'Cordyline australis purpurera' A slow growing evergreen tree with purple to purple-green
leaves, has sprays of white flowers in summer and small globular white fruits in autumn. |
