At last a perfect
golden foliage tree! Gold Nugget Robinia is a compact sized, fast growing, golden foliaged tree that is hardy and easy to establish.
The foliage is brilliant gold and slightly weeping. Golden Robinia
Frisia has been popular as an ornamental tree in Melbourne for
almost 30 years. Chris has trialed Gold Nugget Robinia in his fields
at Emerald by planting a row of Golden Robinia Frisia and Gold
Nugget Robinia next to each other to evaluate and see the
difference. At 6 years of age the Gold Nugget Robinia was very thick
and bushy and only 3.5 meters tall, whereas the Golden Robinia
Frisia was well in excess of 6 meters tall. Other notable
differences are that the Frisia tends to loose a lot of foliage in
its crown in mid summer and stay half bare until winter and the
intensity of the golden colour varies through spring and summer. |
 |
Gold Nugget Robinia resists dropping leaves in the summer keeping a
dense round crown of consistently intense golden foliage from mid
spring until early winter.
Gold Nugget Robinia grows quickly when it is young and forms a
compact small tree with intense golden foliage. It is a Robinia
which means that it will grow in almost any soil as long as it is
not swampy and is hardy to wind, frost, heat, drought and poor soil. |

Robinia pseudoacacia are the most planted ornamental tree in the
world. The best know varieties are the Mop Top, Pink Wisteria Tree &
Golden Robinia Frisia. Robinia are favoured throughout Europe,
Central Europe, China and the United States. This is because of
their extreme hardiness; ease of establishment and attractive
foliage and in some case flowers.
In Eastern Europe and Northern China Robinia are forested for lumbar
and firewood and honey. All Robinia produce Wisteria-like fragrant
racemes of flowers in spring, Gold Nugget Robinia is no exception.
Robinia flowers are edible and taste like sweet fragrant peas. In
France Robinia flowers are served as a desert after being dipped in
a light batter and deep fried. |

Golden trees contrast
beautifully with red and purple plants such as Flax and Cordyline or
Nandina and complement silver foliaged plants such as silver bush or
wormwood.
Golden trees have less green chlorophyll than green trees and this
means that they don’t normally grow as big as their green leaved
brother as green chlorophyll promotes growth.
Gold Nugget Robinia is a PBR protected plant (unigold) and has been
trialed and selected by Chris & Maries as being the best golden
leaved Robinia for Victorian conditions where a small tree is
required.
